What to do?

When we think about teaching children, we must know how they are and how they are going to show us what they want.

Children need to be atracted by the things we want to introduce them. They are energetic and they need to understand what they are learning. The time they spend in their learning is longer, so we have to take advantage of it. Normally, they get bored, that is why our principle task is to make them feel attracted by a lot of different kinds of activities and physicall activities (role-playing, audiovisual, flashcards, games...). We need to let them be imaginative and creative. As emotionally exitable they are, we have to show a particular attention and affection to their needs.

Their learning is ciclical, that is, it is a must to teach in things and go in the same contents over and over again, due to, they learn more slowly and forget quickly. As a result, our objective is to take away the possibles distractions and situations where they could get bored, to achieve their interest and make them feel enthusiastic with what they are acquiring.

From that points emerges the idea of the need of a content and familiar context. Teaching the language must be related to their experiences, linking them in a more personal way. All this must be carried in familiar contexts where they feel comfortable and they have knowledge. Learning more visually turns into a crucial activity for us as teachers, because there they can express themselves.

Here you can find a drawing which shows the main point for teaching children:

The school against racism, by Júlia Torres :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1VtzDV5dkM

Last day, I was surfing the net and I found this short about immigrants, made by some high school students.
The video is very simple but it represents excatly how are situations of racism sometimes. The video is a bit extremist too, but it shows what could be the consequences of a problem like the relation with the immigrants, if its is not solved and, in our case, treated in the classrooms.
When I was at my Primary School, my teachers used to educated me into values, this it means that, above the academic results, there are more things that are also and maybe more importants, such as respect, empathy, understanding, solidarity, etc.
This set of words sounds simple, but its implementation is complex.
Our role as a future teachers is to promote attitudes totally contrary to those seen in the video.
"Tenia dos opciones, mi muerte o la suya. Creí que mi vida valia menos"; no life is above another one. We're all human beings and in class we're all partners and we must to treate and be treated as such.

I let you a link in which you can find a book in PDF called "Actividades para el aula, la escuela contra el racismo". In it, the concepts of racism and xenophobia are worked.
It contains many activities related to some different kinds of racism and foreign people situations. In each activity purposes and objectives are describe, so teachers can use the one that needs more. However, the activities are complex, so maybe is better to use it in the last years of primary and in secondary school courses.

Anyway, I hope that the material provided will be useful.
